Kia's all-new Niro Hybrid - coming soon to Drayton Motors

Kia is shaking up the world of hybrid vehicles with the launch of the all-new Niro, available at Drayton Kia in Swineshead, near Boston, Lincolnshire priced from just £21,295 with an on-sale date of August 8. Niro combines the in-demand styling of a compact crossover vehicle with the low emissions and high fuel economy of a hybrid car. With CO2 emissions as low as 88g/km and a fuel economy of up to 74.3mpg, combined with a generous level of specification the Niro is set to appeal to customers.

With its crossover design it is anything but a run-of-the-mill hybrid. The Niro includes the latest connectivity and active safety technologies, including Kia Connected Services featuring TomTom®, wireless smartphone charging, autonomous emergency braking, smart cruise control and lane-keeping, blind spot and rear cross traffic warning systems. The Niro also offers Android Auto – a first for Kia - which links Android smartphones to Google Maps navigation, Google Play music, hands-free calls and texts and voice recognition via pre-downloaded apps.

LIVING WITH: The All-New Kia Sportage. Part 3: Safety & Handling...

In the first couple of blogs about our time with the all-new Kia Sportage we've covered a lot of aspects of the car that involves being stationary. Now for the good bit- safety and handling!

The All-New Kia Sportage - a real good-looker, superb handling..

The model we tested was the KX3 which is absolutely bristling with safety features. In particular the AWD system is really very clever. The car has a heap of sensors, that are constantly monitoring your driving, the surface of the road, the grip the car has on which wheels etc.

The car will then adjust which wheels the power goes to in accordance with where it's needed- to keep you in control and on the road. For instance- on the motorway in a straight line most of the power will be to the front wheels. This helps fuel efficiency. When cornering, the Sportage is able to deliver more power to the rear wheels as well, to give you increased grip. The power increases and decreases as and when you need it, to the wheels that need it. Clever! The car also has a button to press & use in tricky conditions (in heavy snow for example) at low speeds- delivering equal power to all wheels at once -  Proper 4X4 stuff!

The car is no slouch either, the 2.0 CRDi delivers 134bhp and the AWD system mentioned above gives a great deal of driver confidence when 'getting a wiggle on' as they say. In terms of realistic MPG, we drove it in a mixture of situations, urban, rural, motorways - managing to comfortably get over 43 MPG. Drive it carefully and it'll push up towards 50. 

The display: tells you the most efficient gear to be in and the max. speed of your road

Another feature we liked was the readout on the dash you can see in the picture above. It tells you the most efficient gear to be in for fuel economy and performance. It also tells you the maximum speed limit of the road you're driving on. Helping to keep you safe and you're licence from getting points...

We've probably saved the best safety features though until last. These really did impress us. This model of the Sportage has got quite a few cameras on it-  not just a reversing camera, but cameras that watch the road. They are capable of getting the car to warn you if you drift across the white lines without indicating- the car is making sure you're not nodding off. (This can be turned off if you like...).

What happens if you did nod off, and started to drift, yet didn't hear the warning? The Sportage will actually steer for you, and after a short period of time sound a warning to 'put your hands back on the wheel'. Driving this car really did feel like it's got your back, all the time... 

Naturally we drive sensibly, according to the conditions and not when we're tired. But - it's good to know that you're being watched, just in case....

LIVING WITH: The All-New Kia Sportage. Part 2: Comfort & Space...

In the last blog we got the first impressions out of the way - It seems everyone in the family has a different agenda when it comes to cars, and the Sportage managed to tick all the boxes. So far, so good.

In this blog we'll look at comfort and space - both important if you're going to spend any time in a car! 

The Sportage's ability to deliver warmth / cooling / comfort to all parts of the anatomy...

The model we had benefitted from leather seats. Some like leather, some don't. Personally for me leather is a plus- easy to keep clean, hard wearing and looks, well, top-of-the-range! People often make comments though about leather seats being too hot or too cold, depending on the weather. 

This is where the Sportage KX3 came up trumps. See the video below- the seats can actually cool you as well as warm you up! 

My back is also a good way of measuring how comfortable a car is- I have to confess I'm always fiddling with the seats in search of the ultimate comfortable position. This model of the Sportage benefitted from electric settings for the seats. Two buttons located on the right of the seat next to your bum ran the show... You can move the seat up, down, in, out and adjust the lumber support. I actually managed to find the ULTIMATE position which I tested over a 150 mile round trip. The back? not a murmur...

Space, space and more space...

Plenty of room in the Sportage for all. Long legs? Sorted. Short legs? Sorted. Two kids kept far enough apart in the back? Sorted! The huge sunroof (see below pic) also gave the impression of even more space. All in all nice, relaxing driving for everyone.

I've eluded to there being plenty of space for everyone - and that includes the family dog, a very large, ex-professional racing greyhound, called 'Pal', who was happy to show his feelings towards the car on camera. Well, he's been on Sky Sports a few times so he's not camera shy. Check out Pal's review, below...

LIVING WITH: The Kia Sportage. Part 1: First Impressions...

I've been fortunate to have use of A Kia Sportage KX3 2.0 CRDi from Drayton Kia in Swineshead, Boston, Lincolnshire, giving me the chance to explore the car in the real-world environment, away from the showroom.

The beauty of so called 'living with' testing is that the car gets exposed to real life, and what is really important, such as how it copes with the family, a (very large) dog, long journeys, short journeys and everything else everyday living can throw at it.

Over a series of blogs I'll take you through the experience of living with the Sportage, and you'll see how it fitted in to our family life.

The Kia Sportage - a good-looker and a big hit with the kids...

First Impressions - 'Can we keep it, Dad'

Being passionate about cars it's nice when the family shares the enthusiasm - and this certainly was the case with the Sportage.

The Mrs really liked the high driving position, giving her great visibility particularly at 'T' junctions when turning left, and another car is next to you, turning right. She was also a fan of the reversing camera, giving a crystal clear picture on the large LCD screen.

The Son, aged 11, was, shall we say 'inspired' by the technology in the car, and was tickled pink by the Sportage's actual ability to steer should you nod off at the wheel on long journeys. (NB: after a few seconds it sounds an alarm to wake you up...).  Novel, but a very good safety feature, I'm sure we've all felt tired at the wheel.

The Daughter, aged 15. Unsurprisingly for those amongst you with teenagers it's all about image. The smile on her face as I collected her from her friend's house said it all. If the smile wasn't enough it was backed up by an "OMG it's lovely Dad, can we keep it?'. 

Me - well I'm a combo of all the above, my first impressions were the commanding driving position, the gadgets and features to play with and the stunning looks. I thought the previous model was good looking, but Kia's designers have knocked the ball out the park with the new model!

Next I'll be taking a look at the comfort and space offered by the Sportage, and most importantly, would our huge hound fit in it, and want to get in! Check back for more later in the week...
